Doernbecher and Kiwanis

Doernbecher Children’s Hospital is Oregon and Southwest Washington’s premier children’s hospital.

It provides the widest range of health care services for children. As the pediatric arm of OHSU, its staff conducts world-class research into childhood illnesses and trains tomorrow’s pediatricians.

The support of the Kiwanis Doernbecher Children’s Cancer Program (KDCCP) Greater Portland Golf Tournament enables the Doernbecher staff to provide the most advanced therapies to children battling cancer. Doernbecher cares for more than 80 percent of all Oregon’s young cancer patients and is the only provider of pediatric bone marrow/stem cell transplants in Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Doernbecher is also one of 21 institutions in the nation - and one of only four west of the Mississippi River - designated as a Phase I pediatric research hospital by the National Cancer Institute.

This designation means that the children of Oregon and Southwest Washington have access to the newest pediatric cancer treatments before they are more widely available. Without Doernbecher, children would have to go to Seattle or San Francisco for comparable care.

Forty years ago a child with leukemia had a 15 percent chance of surviving six months. Today, 78 percent with cancer will survive due to advances made at research hospitals like Doernbecher.

None of this would be possible without the outstanding dedication and generosity of all of you. Last year with your help the 11th Annual Doernbecher Golf Tournament raised over $33,000 for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
